Case Study: Jazz Steps San Francisco

Jazz Steps San Francisco is a monthly publication serving the jazz community of the San Francisco Bay Area. The editor needed a writer who could contribute articles highlighting some of the area's up and coming young jazz musicians. I was brought onto the staff to provide profiles, interviews and reviews of local musicians approximately once a month. Using my knowledge of jazz, my previous jazz writing experience, and my seven years as a jazz radio producer as a foundation, I have been able to produce regular features on some of the area's most promising and exciting players.

The research for each of my articles entails an in-depth interview. My knowledge of the music, and of the creative process in general, helps me to come up with questions that elicit thoughtful, interesting perspectives from the musicians I work with. The result has been articles that showcase each musician's unique take on music and inspiration and the wonders and struggles of the musician's life.

I've enjoyed helping Jazz Steps fulfill their mission, while helping local musicians gain crucial media exposure.
