Rocket Words Begins Relationship with JazzWest.com
First article, on trumpeter Khalil Shaheed, highlighted as Feature of the Month
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (April 2003) Jerry Karp of Rocket Words is pleased to report the beginning of a new relationship with JazzWest.com, a website providing comprehensive coverage of the San Francisco Bay Area jazz scene. Many of Northern California's best-known jazz writers contribute to the site, including, most notably, famed jazz journalist Phil Elwood. The site is guided by publisher and editor Wayne Saroyan.
Karp's first feature for the site was a profile on respected East Bay trumpter and educator Khalil Shaheed, included in the site's April edition as "This Month's Featured Article." Shaheed is the leader of several bands, ranging from progressive jazz, to experimental, to blues, and is the founder and driving spirit behind Oaktown Jazz Workshops, a non-profit after-school learning center where teenage jazz musicians can hone their skills and increase their knowledge of music and jazz history.
A background in jazz
Karp has been involved in jazz as a writer and a radio producer, for many years. He was a jazz radio producer for WWNO, New Orleans' National Public Radio affiliate, from 1980 through 1986. During that time, he also wrote a column for Wavelength, a New Orleans music magazine. More recently, Karp has written about jazz for Jazz Steps San Francisco, The San Francisco Reader, and for SFJAZZ.org, the website of the San Francisco Jazz Festival.“It's an honor to be associated with Wayne Saroyan and the incredible roster of talent—writers and musicians alike—who take part in JazzWest,” Karp said. “I had met Khalil once before, at the auditions for the SFJAZZ All-Star High School Ensemble. I was there to write an article for the SFJAZZ website, and Khalil was there as a judge. It was terrific to interview him for JazzWest, and to provide some exposure for the great work he's doing at the Oaktown Jazz Workshops.”
Karp is looking forward to making monthly contributions to JazzWest.com. His article on saxophonist, bandleader and eductator Mike Zilber is slated to appear in early May, 2003.
